The Magic of Clouds: Where Does the Water Go?
Have you ever noticed that a wet towel becomes dry after some time? Or maybe you put a bowl of water for your dog, but later the water level is lower? Where does the water go?
It turns into gas! This is called evaporation. It means liquid water changes into an invisible gas called water vapor. This vapor floats away into the air. This happens everywhere: in oceans, lakes, and even small puddles.
How does it happen? Water needs energy to change into gas. It gets this energy from the Sun. When water molecules get warm, they start moving fast. They jump out of the liquid and fly into the sky. When they leave, they take some heat with them. This makes the remaining water a little cooler.
How do clouds form? The air is like a sponge. It can hold some water vapor, but not too much. Warm air can hold more water than cold air. When the air gets full and then cools down, it cannot hold the vapor anymore.
The vapor then changes back into tiny liquid drops. This is called condensation. These tiny drops need something to sit on, like small bits of dust or salt floating in the air. When billions of these tiny drops come together, they form a cloud!
Clouds on the ground Did you know that you can walk through a cloud? When a cloud forms very close to the ground, we call it fog. It feels misty and cool on your face.
Why are clouds important? Clouds look soft and fluffy, but they are actually very complex. Scientists use big satellites in space, like NASA’s ICESat-2, to study them. By understanding clouds, we can learn more about our planet’s weather and climate.
