They did not eat chocolate as a sweet treat; instead, they ground the cacao beans to create a bitter, frothy beverage that was often flavored with chili peppers and vanilla. This drink was considered sacred and was usually reserved for royalty and special ceremonies. It wasn’t until Spanish explorers brought cacao beans back to Europe in the 16th century that sugar and milk were added, eventually transforming it into the sweet confection we enjoy today.
